Social Media Detox

Social Media. I absolutely love the endless potential and inspiration provided by social media-- the ability to scroll through a feed and see images of beautiful styling, informative posts on any topic you find value in, and inspirational quotes reminding you that you are enough. Instagram, especially, has allowed a whole new genre of creative to take focus and find a creative outlet that can also put food on the table. If you’re someone who has a flair for colour palettes, a keen eye for detail, and a love for pleasing aesthetic, Instagram has provided endless creative opportunities. For me, especially, the beauty found on Instagram has fueled my creativity and allowed me to express and share my outlet with those around me-- from photo styling to my blog.   The downside of social media is how addictive it can be. How we flawlessly reach for our phones every morning [...]

Voir

VOIR - TO SEE Transparency is a beautiful thing. It’s something we search for and it’s rooted in our deepest desire to be fully known. Transparency is being honest, and vulnerable, and just totally you, and when you take the leap into transparency, you freely say you are who you are—no apologies, no take-backs, no regrets. This is it. Transparency is something I long to see everywhere I go—from the people I interact with to the companies I choose to support. Lately, my quest for transparency has shifted from clothing companies to beauty products and I’ve been so pleased to see what I’ve found. One of my favourites so far is Voir Haircare.   Voir is a Canadian-based company who curated a collection of premium haircare essentials designed to inspire your beauty routine through art. Voir is the medium. You are the canvas.   Aside from being totally in love [...]

Reclaiming Faith + Self-Care

I am beginning to dabble in the idea that my immature faith has caused me to deny myself self-love. That the continued message of living as a servant to others has led me to deny that I need time for me and that my time is only valuable when put towards the greater good-- that my value and worthiness comes strictly from my pursuit to put myself last and everything else first. While at first, this sounds heroic and humble, like things we are continually told to do, there's a piece of the message being preached that is missing... like the last page fell from the pile of carefully assembled notes and no one ever cared to pick it up. I'm starting to realize that if God loves us as His children, that if we have immeasurable value to Him, then, yes, He wants us to serve others, serve Him, [...]

Join Me: 30 Day Challenge

I invite you along a journey that will positively impact your life and will change the way you view the world around you. It's 30 days of gratitude and doing ONE thing that will move your life the direction you aspire to go. It sounds simple, but it will come with its own set of unique challenges; you will overcome procrastination, self-doubt, and will come out the other side of these 3o days feeling lighter, happier, and ready to continue on past the 30-day marker as the challenge will have transitioned from a timeline to a lifestyle. What you'll need: A notebook or your phone (I'm old school and love a real notebook and pencil) A willing heart ready to be changed. Oh, and an idea of what you want to do for 3o days.... The challenge has 3 parts: 1. Each day, for 30 days, you will write down in [...]

4 am Beauty

My favourite time of day is the early morning. Not 8 am early morning, Not 6 am early morning, 4 am early morning. Photo (from quite a few years back in Hamilton, Ontario) by the lovely and talented Krysten Cathleen Photography When I happen to wake up around this time of the morning, I relish in the quiet joy of stillness that surrounds me. A sleeping husband to my left, a sleeping cat to my right. The freshly fallen snow or leaves, the freshly sprouted grass or flowers, all untouched but ready for the natural sun stage-light to cast its beams for their stage call so they can show off their beauty, stillness & overnight transformation. In scripture, we read about how tomorrow is a new day. Sorrows may come, hardships, moments of weakness; but the light and love of a new day will come. Each morning, beginning [...]

Balance

At the beginning of each year I choose a 'word' as my intention for the 365 days ahead. Sometimes it is a phrase, sometimes nothing more than a simple word that may receive nothing more than a passing glance to some, but for me it holds significance. My word for 2016 was Brave.   My life centred around the theme of stepping out, trying new things, finding my voice, and really embodying what it means to find strength and not be afraid to shine. Brave was what this past year needed. But being brave; with all its positives leaving me feeling accomplished, like I achieved personal growth and like I truly pushed my own limitations, often left me exhausted.   When I look back at all the things I wanted to accomplish this year, I am left with lists written in beautiful gold ink with barely any stroke marks of [...]

Morning Light

With soft light from the hallway gently cascading warmth into the bedroom, contrasting the cool blue, early morning light from a chilly fall day where the sun hasn't made its first stage call yet, I calmly have the opportunity, without timelines or carved-in-concrete to-do lists, to take time to enjoy the little moments of peace and beauty. Reading about the depth of character emulated in story of the idealistic woman in proverbs 31, reading encouragement and challenge in bible study form from Grit & Virtue, then venturing to Instagram and tapping down the rabbit hole from feed, to like, to profile, leaves me in awe. I stumble upon amazing creators honestly living their lives in struggle and joy, while beautifully displaying their passion in ways that encourage and throw sparks of imagination into the quiet world surrounding me. What an inspiring morning. With my glasses still on the dresser, little [...]

6 Tips for an Ethical Spring Wardrobe

I don’t want to jinx it but I think spring might actually be here... We haven’t had snow in over a week, the daily temperature highs are consistently above zero, and the world of Instagram is gushing over fresh greenery and little flower blossoms. Could it be we have officially survived another Winnipeg winter? One trademark notification the nicer weather is here is how suddenly we all want to be outdoors! The only catch is, it isn’t really THAT nice outside yet, so what are we to do? We could layer up and hit the pavements, venturing into our dull and drab, dirty, and still dead looking city. However, a more common answer is go shopping! Spring weather brings out the "I have nothing to wear" mentality, which leads to the coveted ‘spring wardrobe’. After a winter of hiding indoors nothing says ‘welcome spring’ like new clothing-- and this new [...]

Ethical Easter

"Hundreds of thousands of children labour in the West Coast of Africa to produce cocoa, the main ingredient in chocolate. Specifically, over 40% of the global supply originates in the Ivory Coast, where the US Department of State reports that over 109,000 children work under the worst forms of child labour. Of these 10,000 are victims of human trafficking or enslavement. Children working in cocoa production labour long hours and are often required to use dangerous tools. They are frequently exposed to toxic pesticides in the fields that create health issues and are forced to walk long distances in extreme heat. Furthermore, because these children work long hours they are denied access to an education." -- From Free2Work.org It may have been a few years since working with Not For Sale in the seemingly always foggy and slightly chilly Half Moon Bay, but the knowledge I learned while memorizing statistics [...]

Human Rights

Surprises are the best! One of my best friends, Kim, lives in Hamilton, Ontario. On an adventure to Hamilton to do some house searching many, many moons ago, Kim and I were introduced and basically became instant best friends. She shared her life story, while I listened and played with our mutual friend Cory’s cat. It really was the beginning of an awesome friendship-- from that day I knew that when my wonderful husband and I finally moved to Hamilton, there was one person I could rely on for a hangout, an errand run, and other general fun. Fast forward to the end of 2015 and Kim and I hadn’t seen each other in 11 months. We skyped and texted to remain in contact, but my move to Winnipeg left us thousands of miles apart. While the length of time between visits wasn’t supposed to be this long, surprise visit after re-scheduled surprise visit [...]
