Love + Light

When I first started dreaming up a Christmas class for 2020, I had imagined gathering in person, perhaps around the warmth of a fireplace, soft white lights glowing while the smell of mulled apple cider danced through the room. It was ideas of praying for each other while doing an ornament exchange and moving and breathing in unison while being physically distanced as protocols called for. As restrictions changed I changed what I thought would be possible until the reality set in-- to host a Christmas experience would be to do so virtually. Hosting online classes virtually through Zoom has been such a gift. Before covid, I had been teaching privately only and didn't have any public offering for people to attend. I shifted my private classes online and one went public and now I consider it such a gift to be able to hold space for you wherever you [...]

HARVEST

There's something about Autumn that just draws me in, unlike any other season. To say Fall and Winter are my two favourite seasons is something I probably wouldn't have even realized until my realization a couple of years ago that I'd rather pile on the layers and watch the snow sparkle gently from the sky than sit in the heat in as little clothing as possible with a heat rash.   Autumn, you see, feels so magical. The warm breeze, the changing colours of the leaves-- there's this sense of renewed excitement for the remainder of the year as the Academic calendar kicks off and even those of us who haven't stepped foot in a classroom for years can feel the energy of the season that brings a crisp air to sweep out the lethargic heat of summer.   Autumn and winter are two of the more introspective seasons. They [...]

Seek Truth

Taking on the Masters Program by Holy Yoga this year has been an adventure. Once I completed my 225-hour training in November of 2018, I knew I had just scratched the surface and I was immediately drawn to taking the Masters program. The Masters program is a 300-hour training the full duration of the year. Each class takes us a little bit deeper into understanding God, scripture, yoga, spiritual disciplines, and so so so much more. It feels like that popular quote, 'the more you learn, the less you know' as you are opened up to so many concepts and ideas and theories that make you want to freeze time so you can continue to learn.   While many of the weekly classes, additional video and audio recordings and books to review have left me saying, 'this was my favourite class yet!', this past Monday's class was nothing short of [...]

Hope + Heart

You are invited to HOPE + HEART: a Christmas Holy Yoga Experience! Since completing my yoga teacher training with Holy Yoga I knew I wanted to do Christmas yoga flow. I couldn't imagine a more perfect way to begin using my training-- hosting an event that would truly be an expression of my own experience with Holy Yoga. The event will open with a sharing of information on Holy Yoga and what 'Christian yoga' is. Then we will move into a few moments of prayer and meditation practicing Lectio Divina, an ancient method of praying scripture. The yoga portion of our class will be a heart-opening slow flow practice to the sounds of inspiring Christmas and worship music that will remind you of the hope of the Christmas season. During a slow flow class, we hold poses for longer periods of time to learn the flow and build muscle memory [...]

My Thoughts on Yoga + Jesus

When you say the universe, I hear Jesus. When you say the divine within, I hear the Holy Spirit. When you say you are equipped with everything you need, that you are meant to be in this moment, that this is exactly where you need to be, I hear that with God nothing is impossible, that we are all called to bloom where we are planted, that no matter where I am, I can live out a purpose bigger than I am. Yoga has become a somewhat controversial topic in the realms of spirituality-- especially for Christians. For years I’ve been hearing about how ‘Christians shouldn’t do yoga’ and while the list of things Christians should or shouldn’t do could go on and on and on (and can vary, depending who you talk to!), the state of our heart is at the root of what we should or shouldn’t do. [...]

Prairie Yogi

Rachelle is one the sweetest people I've met since I started attending Yoga Public in the late summer of 2015. It's kinda funny-- I've made more meaningful relationships with yoga instructors than other students I attend class with. I guess after seeing faces again and again, and after the easy conversation starter of 'hey, you work at Jenna Rae Cakes', it's easier to connect with teachers than students. Rachelle is the inventor of Prairie Yogi. As defined on their website: We are inspired by the big skies of our geography and the big hearts of our people, and believe that by sharing the stories of our community and bringing together that community by creating inspiring experiences, we are making the prairies a bit brighter of a place. I resonate with this. The longing for community, of people to truly share life with, is something I find woven into my being. [...]

Healing – My Healing Session Experience

Healing is such an interesting word. We can think of healing in many different ways but its deepest root is positivity—to become whole again. I recently had a healing session with one of my yoga-teachers-turned-friend Savannah. I will be the first person to admit, when she first mentioned I should come to a healing session, my mind was full of doubt and disbelief, intertwined with playful curiosity and intrigue. As someone who has a firm belief in my own faith, I am definitely open to hearing about what other people find worthy of their own belief—where people find truth, and how similarities form. Let’s be honest, as a Christian, we are continually told to go out and make disciples of those around us, spread the gospel, and see people come to Christ. One of the reasons I love hearing about another individuals belief system is because I love seeing where [...]

Brave

If you’ve ever taken a personality profile test, you’ve probably stumbled across the part of the configuration process where you are provided a page of seemingly endless characteristics and qualities. Most of the time, you are instructed to either pick the words that most accurately describe you, or to select the words others would use to best describe you. We pick the words we are familiar with—words we have heard before when people have talked about us, characteristics our friends and family mention they admire in us, or even those words we remember our astrological sign being strong in from when we read our horoscope as a kid in some teen magazine. These words probably don’t change much as time goes on—perhaps we add in a word or two down the line from recent accomplishments, or remove a word if we are limited in the number we are allowed to select. While we change as individuals, with variances in interests and [...]

Namaste

I had a few friends in Hamilton who told me I would enjoy yoga if I tried it. They were avid yogi’s who absolutely loved the benefits hot yoga had to offer. While they may have suggested I try out the practice, I never did in a studio setting. I did, however, enjoy doing 'Yoga with Adriene' on Youtube. When my wonderful husband accepted the opportunity to play drums at the Hard Rock Café in Dubai for a few months, I was left with a lot of free time to fill in order to distract me from the fact that it's just me and Bourbon at the apartment. Enter, yoga. Being thankful for the lesser cost of a trial membership, I embarked on a journey of yoga-- first at Moksha, and now, at Yoga Public. I’ve enjoyed what practicing yoga has offered.  The physical benefits of practicing are getting in [...]
