Illuminating Advent
I remember my mom’s homemade yule log…
I can recall the greyish-white bark as the log sat on our dining room table, four taper candles sitting across the length of the top, tinsel garland swirled between them, and a plastic ‘Merry Christmas’ plaque that I’m sure was re-purposed from a cake that was indulged in years ago that has been saved and reused many, many times.
Each Sunday leading up to Christmas, one more candle would be lit until the final Sunday before Christmas day where all four would be lighting the yule log in all its glory, the candles burning bright in a staircase pattern as the freshest candle was lit for the first time and the first-lit candle was burning close to the bottom.
Sacred Ordinary Recap
I have a tattoo on the inside of my right bicep that says ‘follow your dreams’ in a banner across an old-school style looking compass. The tattoo, featuring classic shades of blue and red, framed by two yellow stars, has been on my arm for, if I remember correctly, around 17 or 18 years. This idea of ‘following your dreams’ can seem cliche and has often been viewed in a negative light in Christian circles...
Embodied Living - Listen and Respond
How easy is it for us to look at the birds of the sky, the flowers blooming, the stars shining from billions and trillions of miles and light years away, and see Divine fingerprints and the wisdom of God’s creation flowing out of every atom as we gaze in wonder at the world before us. As life unfolds, our very surroundings seem to whisper or roar of the Divine, of Love expressed in a multitude of ways, we acknowledge how each creation can speak to us of God’s wisdom.
Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room
The season is full of magic and wonder and we can feel drawn into the hustle and bustle that makes it feel like we’re swept up in the dance of holiday momentum. The simple act of putting up a Christmas tree quickly turns into baking cookies which turns into hosting a gathering and finding fun holiday events to take part in and, before you know it, Christmas Eve arrives and there can be the thought of `wow, it’s already here!’. How quickly it can seem to slip through our hands as we did it all without being truly present to it all.
Journey of Light
As I write this post I am seated in our living room on the couch across from our large window where snowflakes are gently falling in steady streams. It's already beginning to darken outside, even though it's only just after four in the afternoon. The Christmas tree is aglow and filled ornaments that have been gifted from friends and family throughout the years. On our bookshelf are DIY porcelain trees with stars shapes illuminated by a strand of mini lights. As it continues to darken more and more, I am drawn to the ways the light of the various trees gives off a warmth, inviting me to linger here a little longer before running off to the next task to bathe in their glow.
